Our Mission

Like Glinda herself, we believe in the power of good deeds. So we started Glinda’s Closet, a nonprofit, to bring the joy of dressing up for Halloween to underprivileged kids in our nearby communities.

Our fiendish plans

We are collecting new and gently used kids’ costumes year-round. And we’re also taking donations to fund more costumes. Then we’ll distribute them at fun-filled local events where kids can come in, browse our stellar closet, try on costumes and go home with one. We’re starting with our neighboring communities in Genesee and Oakland County for now, with the goal of eventually branching out through these counties, then all of metro Detroit, then statewide.

Special requests

We’re working with some local shelters to grant a few special request costumes each year.

Other uses for funds

Monetary donations will be used to fund more costumes, help cover the costs of our events and other expenses like delivering costumes. We currently have no staff; this is a volunteer effort running on kindness.

Sherry Long

Shelter of Flint, Program Coordinator

“The parents and children at the Shelter of Flint really loved having Glinda’s Closet come and provide Halloween costumes for them. Often times parents do not have the means to purchase Halloween costumes. This causes stress on the parent and the child, as the child wants to participate in the activities like the other children during this holiday.

By coming directly to the shelter, Glinda’s Closet provides the convenience of letting the child pick out their own costume. The children are so excited once they get their costume. We then go on a field trip to Crossroads Village, where the children get to trick or treat and ride the Halloween train.

I look forward to working with Glinda’s Closet again this Halloween season. They bring so much joy to so many people by providing this service.”

Christina Ramirez

Community Resource Room Manager

“HAVEN has the privilege of working with wonderful community partners like Glinda’s Closet to help eliminate some of those barriers our survivors face. This partnership provides the children who are in our programs, or whose parents are enrolled in services, the opportunity to bring their kids to HAVEN to shop for new costumes at no cost to the family.

The joy it brings to these kids when they are empowered to select the costume they desire is priceless. But Glinda’s Closet doesn’t stop at just their costume program; they also provide us with candy to make sure we have enough to pass out during our annual Trunk or Treat events. Then, all the kids who shopped for a costume show up for trunk or treating at HAVEN, where they can feel safe amongst old friends. These kids are so proud of their new costumes, they just show them off along with all their candy. HAVEN alone could not give these families the full round of support if it wasn’t for the generosity of our community partners and the people at Glinda’s Closet for helping us remove those barriers and give experiences that last a lifetime.”
